Full Stop 3

Julian Fellows Presides

I stumbled across a lovely little quiz show on BBC4 the other week that I feel must have stemmed from the recent increase in interest in the English language that came about following Lynn Truss’s book (or is that “…Truss’ book”?), the incredibly successful “Eats, Shoots and Leaves”. Never Mind The Full Stops is a quirky panel show burrowed away in the depths of BBC4’s late night schedule, that is hosted by the delightful Julian Fellows who positively bristles at the common misuse and abuse of our mother tongue… I hope he never visits us here at Fazzinchi.co.uk, he’d have a fit! Plenty of writers and journalists are on hand to have a go as panelists and join in the multitudinous rounds of questions. Of particular note is the “dialects” round, whereby a member of the public is asked to make a short speech or tell a story using their local accent, turn of phrase and dialect. The result is baffling, although worth tuning in to have a go… having said that, The Other Viewer is remarkably good at it. (I’ll take an opportunity to share you with my favourite word: “tmesis”, meaning the interpolation of one or more words between the parts of another compound word). So, is it worth watching? Abso-bloody-lutely!
