Quick On The Draw
Going a little off piste this time by not writing about the things I’ve been watching on broadcast telly but instead something I’ve seen on DVD (hmmm… may be this could turn into an irregular feature). I recently purchased a copy the Doctor Who story, The Invasion, which has just been released on shiny disc. It’s an old 1968 story set during Patrick Troughton’s tenure in the TARDIS and features the Doctor’s 4th (?) encounter with the Cybermen. The interesting thing (well, one of many) is that two of the eight episodes have been lost from the BBC archives for years and so, some bright spark has come up with the idea of filling these gaps with animated episodes. Fortunately, audio recordings of the originals do exist, so it was a not-so-simple exercise to create an animation to fit the soundtrack. The results are really rather lovely. The work of Cosgrove Hall (best known for Count Duckula and Dangermouse) has been seen before in Doctor Who in the online story, The Scream Of Shalka, and the visuals here continue in a similar style but the decision to make a black and white cartoon is sheer genius. I really hope we see much more of this style in the future as it adds a new lease of life to stories we may never have got to see in their entirity again.
