Ashes 1 1

“I think I’m Going Back”

They’re back and they’re bad. A terrible toss to lose at the Gabba saw the defence of the Ashes get off to a shocker of a start as the Aussies finished on 346-3 at the end of the first day, and it was an all too familiar outcome with some notable similarities to the disasterous 2002/3 tour. Freddie was obviously pumped up judging from his celebrations for his two wickets but everyone else looked a bit over-awed: Grievous Bodily Harmison was wayward to say the least and he really needs to step up quickly or this Ashes battle is going to go south awfully quickly for England, in fact only Hoggard amongst the bowlers is not on the comeback from injury and none of the top 7 batsmen have played away in an Australia before. Despite all that, I still feel a little confident… it was a peach of a wicket for the batsmen and there’s an awful long way to go before this one is settled.
It’s tough to follow the joyous game of cricket when the play takes place between 12am and 7am but it didn’t stop me trying to burn the midnight oil last night… extra rations of strong coffee and Red Bull have been shipped in from Tesco’s to help me through the next six weeks, and I bet a lot of other people have been Googling for “sleep deprivation coping strategies” The Sky team are back in force to help us through the night fronted by the effortlessly talented David Gower and there are lots of other opportunities to catch up with the nocturnal goings on as the world and his wife seem to be podcasting daily. One day night gone, twenty-four to go.

Well. 602-9 declared and England respond with 53-3 at the close. So, England to bat for a little over 2 more days; double centuries for Bell and Pietersen and good support further down; get to about 750 by lunch on Day Five; then Gilo can stick one to the folks who criticised his selection by bowling ‘em out on a last day pitch for 100.

erm….. I think the lack of sleep is imparing my judgement
