Stating The Bleedin’ Obvious
Can Gerry Robinson Fix The NHS? On the basis of this show, somebody can, surely. This fantastic documentary shown on three consecutive nights last week posed some excellent questions to the powers-that-be, to the extent that the show itself made the news. Now, I have to confess (and viewers of my TV Viewing diary will know already) that I have only watched episode “1″ so far, but “2″ and “3″ are on the Sky Planner and waiting for a suitable evening and a stiff drink for me and The Other Viewer to watch. If you really want your heckles raised I suggest that you get your recent P60 out and make a note of how much National Insurance you paid last year, then you can sit back and admire how your money has been spent (hence the need for that stiff drink).
As the third biggest employer in the world (over one million employees) and at a £100,000,000,000 cost, “fixing it” is, of course, easier said than done but Gerry’s frustrations were clear and he shared them with the viewer in a very effective way. Rather than looking at the high level problems that dominate the thoughts and speeches of the politicians, Gerry took us (literally) to the cutting edge of the problems, into surgeries and clinics and talking to (and working with) the staff who are responsible for working with the public. He spent a couple of days a week in a fairly successfull hospital in Rotherham and was witness to the worst kind of organisation and the kind of environment that gives the public sector such a bad image in the eyes and minds of the public. I look forward to the next two installments and will report back here.

Have now seen Part 2 and found it to be even more frustrating than part 1. Gerry moved his attention to the opthalmic department of the hospital where he found the staff busily building barricades to protect themselves from reprisals, incriminations and change. I just hope I don’t get sick any time soon. AND the trail for part 3 with the letter of complaint from the Chief Exec fills me with dread that this’ll never be fixed.
