Dead Weird
Another Girl, Another Body
If there is one thing about the flashback sequences in Waking The Dead, it’s that they’re pretty weird at the best of times with their jarring, out-of-focus camera movements and intense music. When you add to the mix the taking of hallucinogenic drugs as shown in the latest two-parter, “Double Bind“ then you know that the weirdness will be off the scale. The story revolved around an escaped psychiatric patient with a series of murders linked to his past that was being investigated at the behest of Eve (as played by Tara Fitzgerald), the latest member of the Cold Case team. She has been a great addition to the cast of characters this season, showing a sharp mind along with a fascinating unpredictability and the ability to function with seemingly no sleep whatsoever. Her scenes at the body farm are truly memorable for joy and happiness she shows while all around her (and the viewers) are trying to keep their lunch down.
One of the bets aspects of this installment was the movement in the relationship between Boyd and Grace. The episode began with an astonishingly huge row between the two that led to Grace quitting and barely putting in an appearance for the next two hours, save for a brief cameo to come in and question one of the suspects. However, it was Boyd’s reaction to being confronted by the truth behind his recent and well-documented personality problems that was most intriguing to watch, that all seems to stem back to the death of DS Mel Silver a couple of series ago. It would seem that a pay-off to this long running back story is in the offing, but we have to wait for two weeks before the next story to make room for the BAFTA’s this Sunday.
