Holding Out For A Hero

After the internet buzz surrounding TV’s “Next Big Thing”, UK viewers got their first (legitimate) opportunity to see Heroes last night as the first two episodes debuted on the Sci-Fi Channel. The comic book nature of the subject matter might have led one to think that we were in store for a Mutant X style slice of nonsense but what we saw was all together different. A number of different strands ran through the hour as we were introduced to the extended cast of characters who shared some X-Men stylee super powers. In this first episode a few, key intersections of these strands were introduced but I am sure that more will follow because the whole thing has that “Lost” feel that suggests that regular and observant viewers will be rewarded with plot points to debate and little memes and themes to watch out for.

It was far from perfect though. The ensemble cast made for a patchwork quilt rather than a work of art and some of the patches were weaker than others. I quite enjoyed Hiro’s story with his Star Trek obsession and Claire, the invincible cheerleader was fun to watch (although the special effects for her powers only scored about 5/10 for me). Other bits were less appealing but they all had the potential for some future embellishment. “Potential” might just be the key word here because Heroes has it in spades.

EDIT (21 Feb):  Have now seen part 2 “Don’t Look Back” and the potential iss starting to be realised already.  The Hiro angle continued to delight and even the Flying Petrellis were entertaining this time round.  This is gonna be good.

Why on earth the Sci Fi channel aren’t showing this in widescreen is beyond me. My screencap is evidence enough that this pan and scan’ed imagery really sucks. Hopefully it will be in its full widescreen and DOG-free glory when it makes it to the BBC.
