One For The Future
Another quality drama from ITV came along last week in the guise of Instinct, which starred the really rather good (and worthy of noting for future reference), Anthony Flanagan. He has already played parts in Cracker, Life On Mars and Vincent but I hope he gets to spread his wings away from gritty crime drama soon. The main conceit of this tale was that Flanagan’s character, DCI Thomas Flynn, was a bit of a wunderkid who had an uncanny capability to assess information and act on, well, instinct. Parts of the tale were fairly predictable such as the fact that when Flynn noticed the picture askew on the wall, we all knew it would play a more significant part later on and you got the impression that it was whodunnit-by-numbers. However, that’s just me being picky because there was enough going on with the gently, twisting plot and increasingly sinister series of killings to keep the murder mystery fans tuned in over both installments. It was also rewarding to see both the main suspect and main police officer coping with the arrival of a new member of their family, the former having a Son-I-Never-Knew-I-Had turn up on the doorstep and the latter finally meeting the half-sister whose very existence he’d been denying to himself all her life. I’m not sure whether this is intended to pick up the mantle of Prime Suspect or Cracker and become an ongoing series of stories or whether it will remain a one-off, I’m hoping the former because it certainly has some pedigree and potential.
