Gadget Show b

The Gadget Show has sneeked back on to the channel Five and continues to make for great tea-time viewing. It’s premise is a simple one of light-hearted fun messing about with new gadgets.  The three presenters seem more and more at ease with each show but the whole thing is starting to run the risk that it is more about the hosts having fun than it is about the “toys” themselves.  Take the most recent edition for example.  We were promised a challenge between Jason and Suzi that would pit the Mac OS against Windows, I hoped that we would get a bit of insight into the technology and a serious debate, and it would have been even nicer if Jon had pitched in with a Linux system too. However, what we got was the two of them on a trip to Italy to a traditional festival that involved lots of oranges and we spent ages watching them having a whale of a time.  This was all well and good but they left the analysis of their respective laptops to the final few minutes, which was a bit of a disservice.  There have also been a couple of inconsistencies with theie WiFi hotspot campaign being conspicuous by its absence and I guess that they are also a victim of the current uproar over telephone-based TV competitions as they seem to be missing their big and always impressive sounding competitions… I’m rather glad that I’ve never entered any. There is still room in the schedules for a serious technology show and I was hopeful that the return of the Tomorrow’s World brand to the BBC may result in something but it wasn’t to be.  In the meantime, I’ll continue to enjoy The Gadget Show.
