Billie Don’t Be a Hero

The BBC has today confirmed that Billie Piper is returning to Doctor Who.  On behalf of Doctor Who fans everywhere, can I just ask… “What in the name of wibbly-wobbley, timey-wimey stuff is going on?”  As you can imagine, the internet dwellers (well, the folks over on the forum formerly known as Outpost Gallifrey at any rate) have gone into meltdown.  And for once, I am really unsure how to take the news.  Over the course of the last three years I have been fairly trusting in the decision making processes that have been employed down in BBC Wales and even the promotion of Catherine Tate from one-off Christmas companion to fully fledged, season long, TARDIS inhabitant has been something that has gained my approval.  But now, this news fills me with dread.  Rose’s story is one that has been told, it had a begining and a middle and an end, it was concluded wonderfully in Doomsday and Billie herself seemed to be moving on.  Now we find there is to be another installment… but will it be Godfather: Part 2 or Shrek The Third?

It cannot be a decision based upon the need for an injection of life into the viewing figures, they are stratospherically high anyway.  Therefore, and I sincerely hope, the story remains king.  The theory that appeals most is that the mysterious hand that plucks the Master’s ring from the burning embers of his funeral pyre at the end of Last of the Time Lords turns out to be an evil Rose (a Rani?) or some such villainous force that will break the good Doctor’s hearts.  There seems to be much more mileage in realising that potential, than in respect of having the Rose we all know and love return.  Now it would seem that Donna, Martha, Jack and Rose will all be seen in Series Four, it’s starting to feel crowded again.  I hope the powers that be don’t forget lessons learnt from the time of Nyssa, Tegan and Adric.
