Here’s Looking At Ood!

Some of you may be wondering why I haven’t been posting here much of late. The reason is because I have just launched a new blog over on WordPress.com that has been eating up a fair bit of my posting time, but fear not, because I will back in full flow here very soon (as well as over there) because this Saturday sees the start of the television schedule which is covered by the festive bumper issue Radio Times. This means that there will be a plethora of shows that meet the “PWW Criteria”: that most rigorous and exacting of criteria which determines which programmes

There is a report on the Guardian website about a speech that James Murdoch made about the BBC, in which Dear Mr Murdoch beseeched the establishment to deregulate and tear down the structures of the BBC. I paraphrase, of course, but follow the link through if you want to see him in all his glory. The phrase, “lowest common denominator” means nothing to this man. Inevitably, now the idiocy of this idea has started to permeate the Twitterverse, a hashtag ( #welovethebbc ) has emerged to fight back. Here are a few reasons to join in and why the BBC is so wonderful…

Mitchell and Webb Have The Right Idea

July, the height of the summer and the month when we are closer to next Christmas than we are to the last one. For some, of a more cynical nature perhaps, being a long way from December may be seen as reason for celebration but for me it is the pits: it means that summer is pretty much in full swing. Flaming June has been and gone and flamed away for a change, Wimbledon has served up all its strawberries for another year, and kids and teachers up and down the country are counting the days until they break up for summer. It’s been boiling down here in Sussex by the sea…. and I hate it.

[rant] Just watched an advert for the NHS’s latest “Stop Smoking” campaign.  All very noble of course, but I it really wound me up.  The gist of the 30-second ad (do we call them “infomercials” now?) was basically to answer the question, “What are the real reasons for you to give up smoking”?  The answer to which was a sequence of 5 or 6 talking heads pieces from members of the public (or actors) talking to camera saying “I want to walk my daughter down the aisle”, “I want to see our grandchildren grow up”, “I want to see my son graduate”.  i.e. the only reasons worth living for

Danny Boy from Lost

Oh Danny Boy, why is the island mo-oving?

“Where have you been?”, almost none of you have asked.  Well, it’s been a hectic old month at the office and, to be honest, the last thing I’ve found myself wanting to do after a day of writing reports and staring at a computer screen, is to stare at a computer screen and write reports about TV shows.  In fact… (1) Watch some telly, (2) listen to music and (3) play games, is about all my addled mind can cope with of late. Anyhoo, here are the latest thoughts (as well as the normal hollow promises about posting more often)…

  1. Enjoyed tweeting through the Cup Final yesterday despite the final outcome.  If you’re not a Twitter

Following on from Rob’s meme (linked) here’s my wish list for celebrities who, if I had to be stuck in a lift, I would like to be stuck with.

  1. Professor Robert Winston. Poster child for the rational mind and could probably kick-off some great debate on the issues of the day to take our collective minds of the claustrophbia.
  2. Gene Hunt. To tell it how it is if anyone gets out of hand.
