The Eyes Have It

Steven Moffatt has written a story in each of the two series of the Doctor Who so far (this two parter, The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances, and The Girl In The Fireplace in series two) and while Paul Cornell got a Hugo nomination for Father’s Day, Stephen went on to win the gong for this double bill. However, it is not just anonymous award’s committee that say this is good, in any survey of stroies you care to read you can guarantee that these stories will always do well. Take for (more…)

Christmas Review #11 of 12

A double header of Torchwood on New Year’s Day saw the first season reach its tumltuous conclusion on BBC3.  The first half was the episode “Captain Jack Harkness”, which saw Jack and Tosh diverted through the rift back to a 1940’s dance hall only to come face-to-face with another Captain Jack Harkness, who, it turned out, was the original.  It was in the 1940’s that we first met the Captain back in the first season of Doctor Who in the ‘fantastic’ episode, “The Empty Child”, (more…)

The plots are tending to be a little derivative of other genre shows with the best/worst example being the “Countrycide” episode. In fact, Russell T Davies stated as much in the installment of Torchwood: De-Classified, which (more…)

Point to the Cyberwoman

Episode 4 of Torchwood, saw the team discover that one of their own had been hiding a “Cyberwoman” in the basement and I’m starting to see the Doctor Who-like enthusiasm of the crew get reflected on screen, they’re all clearly having the time of their lives: picture the scene… “I know, I know, let’s have a cyberman fight with a pterodactyl!”.  The whole story felt like it could easily have translated to (or may had been translated from) the parent show but that didn’t detract from (more…)

“Everything Changes But You”

Doctor Who’s first, fully formed, spin-off series hit the airwaves on Sunday night as the much hyped Torchwood debuted to astonishing viewing figures on BBC3. The trailers and teasers that clogged up the BBC, inter-programme gaps for a couple of weeks beforehand and the covers on listing magazines are pretty much unprecidented for a show on a digital channel. However, the show lived up to the promise and more than 2.3 million watched both episodes in the (more…)
