Posts Tagged 'Celebrity'

Following on from Rob’s meme (linked) here’s my wish list for celebrities who, if I had to be stuck in a lift, I would like to be stuck with.

  1. Professor Robert Winston. Poster child for the rational mind and could probably kick-off some great debate on the issues of the day to take our collective minds of the claustrophbia.
  2. Gene Hunt. To tell it how it is if anyone gets out of hand.

Telly Evangelist

Another week older and deeper in debt, or something like that.  This-week-that-was brought the Other Viewer and me a fairly subdued seven of days of viewing with a paucity of what could be described as “exciting” television.  The closest we got to open-mouthed amazement were the awful site of the “15-stone, 8 year-old”, the awful singing of the inmates on Celeb Fame Academy; and the awful West Ham defence.  None of these, then, in the running for the much cherished Show

Don’t Mess With Chloe

Where does the time go? Just ask Jack, ‘cos, in case you hadn’t heard, he’s back and the clock is ticking again. Day Six of 24 hit our screens last night (review to follow) with all the usual bombs, intrigue and high jinx. Also, in a similar vein we saw the return of Prison Break with its continuing storyline style that punishes all but the most dedicated of viewers. It’s definitely the season for watching imported TV from the USA, just have a look below at what we’ve been watching and just

Masters Of All They Survey

Well, it’s back and everyone’s talking about it… again.  “I’m A Celebrity…” is becoming a stalwart of ITV’s schedules, back for a sixth outing and attracting big ratings for a Monday night (and massive ratings for ITV).  The reasons for the success of this show can be summed up in two words: “Ant” and “Dec”.  They clearly have such a great time hosting the trials and providing the links, their enthusiasm is infectious and can make the otherwise unwatchable ordeal of seeing various

Extra Orlando

Orlando Bloom Having a Laugh

There’s something quite comfortable about Ricky Gervais these days.  His outlook seems to be one whereby he doesn’t want to join in with the common or garden celeb culture of the day.  He never turns up on adverts, rarely makes cameo appearances, only goes to red-carpet events when he’s been nominated for something and by all accounts turns down work by the bucketload if he’s not 100% bought into the art of it.  Following a career that went from zero to stratospheric in almost no time at all, this is hugely commendable and may be one of the reasons why I respect him so much.  The main reason though, is that he is simply so good at what he does.  The new series of Extras has hit our screens and started off where the last one left with a few well aimed potshots at the celebrity lifestyle he resists so much himself.   Add into the mix a range of A- and B- listers only too happy to poke fun at themselves and you’re onto a winner.  However, the style of humour doesn’t quite have that level of cringeworthiness of The Office (but then, what does?).  Occasionally, the laughs are crowbarred in with little subtelty and seem designed to shock rather than be funny but may be that’s a bit of prudishness on my part.  In the end, it is Gervais’ character of Andy Millman that makes this so great, his quiet desparation and sarcasm is a joy to behold and, I may stand alone here, is just as funny a character as David Brent.

Big Broth BB

“Do you remember the time?”

Now is the time of year when many people are summing up their collective recollections of the latest incarnation of Big Brother and beginning their reviews with the words “Big Brother 2006 will be remembered for…” and whether it be Pete’s Tourettes, Nikki’s tantrums, Richard’s Diary Room bitchiness, or even Endemol’s ongoing incompetence, all well and good… Big Brain, Little Brother, and Big Mouth have all provided adequate commentary on these enjoyable, Orwellian inspired antics. However, this is the time when my enjoyment of the show packs its bags and heads off on its summer holiday to be replaced by a despairing sense of frustration with the world. The 22 contestants have had their fifteen minutes and it’s been suitably fun to watch on, hurling abuse at the television, at Grace and at Russell Brand’s hair but now it’s over. In any normal society, the 22 of them would scuttle back to their respective homes and occasionally talk about their experiences to their friends over a pint. What we get though, is a bombardment of faces coming back to haunt us on magazine covers, at film premieres, in the press, and worst of all in more dreary “celebrity” TV shows. Now, I don’t blame the ex-BB’ers themselves, they’re just looking after number one and if some media type is willing pay good money for a chat or a photoshoot, why not? My problem is with us!! Why on earth do we care about these people, they have done their time, they’ve served their purpose and they should be moving on. Jade, Chantelle and, inevitably, Nikki will be haunting us for years but can someone please explain why any of us should be the slightest bit interested?
