After You've Gone

Hit, Miss or May Be

The Friday night comedy slot on BBC1 is always a successful one and, seemingly, this is regardless of the quality of the product on offer (see, My Hero as prime example).  The latest effort is After You’ve Gone, starring Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie and it follows in the footsteps of the really rather good Not Going Out, so it had a lot to live up to in my book.  There were some positives such as Nicholas Lyndhurst.  He is one of those actors to whom I have a knee-jerk reaction of (more…)

Green Wing final2

Statham and Joanna Going Down In Flames

The makers of Green Wing, much like The Office before it, seem to have decided to call it a day after two series and a one-off special and I, among many others, are going to miss it like mad. The 90-minute finale essentially had two main and entirely unrelated stories bringing themselves to their conclusions, interspresed with typical surrealism from Sue White and also the girls in HR. The funniest moments came from Statham and Joanna as they were on the run following their (more…)

Ugly Betty

Friday Night’s Alright For Watching

Channel 4 have managed to secure the rights to one the current “big” shows from over the Pond.  Ugly Betty is the much vaunted love child of programmes such as Sex And The City and, more obviously, Desperate Housewives.  It’s not an out and out comedy (thankfully we are spared a laughter track) but it’s not anything approaching full-blooded drama either.  Like those other shows, it manages to find its own niche and somehow satisfy both sets of viewers.  The delightfully (more…)

Hogfather1

Christmas Review #2 of 12

To the best of my knowledge, this was the first time that any of Terry Pratchett’s work has been turned into a visual medium.  I’ve always thought that the Discworld books were perfect fodder for an animated series of some description but anyone who has been within the vague vicinity of a Sky TV channel over the festive period cannot have failed to have noticed that Sky TV (not exactly renowned for making original dramas) have produced a real life version of The Hogfather. Worst Xmas

Christmas Review #1 of 12

The week leading up to Christmas for me was one of last minute shopping, going out too much and generally breathing a big sigh of relief that work was all over.  However, the evenings provided an opportunity to tune in to three more episodes in the madcap life of Howard Steele.  Following on from his previous Worst Week Of My Life outings (that lead up to his wedding and then to the birth of his first child), it was another slapstick outing of idiocy and misadventure in the week (more…)

Catherine Tate 2

Another Tate Incarnation
The third season of The Catherine Tate Show is being shown as one of three show’s that form BBC2’s Thursday night of comedy and is carrying on is exactly the same format and style as we’ve seen before. There are moments of genius in there… and while it’s a bit of a one trick pony, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of Lauren’s “Does my face look bovvered?” or the nan character who swears like a trooper. The newer character’s are a little hit and miss though: the office worker who (more…)
