Billie Don’t Be a Hero

The BBC has today confirmed that Billie Piper is returning to Doctor Who.  On behalf of Doctor Who fans everywhere, can I just ask… “What in the name of wibbly-wobbley, timey-wimey stuff is going on?”  As you can imagine, the internet dwellers (well, the folks over on the forum formerly known as Outpost Gallifrey at any rate) have gone into meltdown.  And for once, I am really unsure how to take the news.  Over the course of the last three years I have been fairly trusting in the decision (more…)

Importance

The Importance of Missing Football

One of the less satisfying aspects of this blog in its previous incarnation was my attempt to record a diary of every programme I was watching on the telly.  Not every flick of the thumb during regular channel hopping sessions as I would work my way through the multitudinous offering of the Sky World package, of course.  Instead, the main programmes that I had tuned into were devotedly recorded (well, I wasn’t even that devoted to be honest) and early diarising even (more…)

What Are You Doing Here?

If Steven Moffat had sat down with me over a coffee to talk about what Doctor Who meant to me, so that he could go off and write a special, five-miute scene, he could not have written a piece that resonated with me any more than “Time Crash“.  You see, Peter Davison was “my” Doctor as well.   Although I had watched  the show for most of Tom Baker’s tenure, I probably didn’t begin my fannish ways until PD and his crickety-cricket garb burst onto the scene in 1981. Children in Need

… And All That Jazz

Children in Need is one those staples of the British TV schedules that you either love (and consequently find yourself spending your Friday night curled up in front of the telly with a bottle or two of something white), or you hate (and see it as a huge incovenience when there’s nothing worth watching if you stay in and you can’t go out for fear of people pestering you for your loose change). I have to confess that I fall more into the former category than the latter and that is despite the fact (more…)

Back in Action

Way back on Sunday 1st January when we were nursing sore heads (and I was re-launching this website) there was a little show that sneaked onto BBC1 from the team that brought us Doctor Who. It wasn’t the much hyped Torchwood that was rattling towards its conclusion late at night on minority channels but instead it was The Invasion of the Bane, the first installment of the Sarah Jane Adventures. Now, here we are nine months later and that embryonic first outing has matured (more…)

Where Did It All Go Right?

Much overdue but here, at last, are my considered thoughts on “Last of the Time Lords”, the final instalment of series three of Doctor Who. Even though it was loved and loathed in apparent equal measure within the picky world of fandom, the broadcast secured some very positive viewing figures that we all now seem to take for granted from these finales and fairly widespread acclaim.  Even the BBC invested a little extra in this televisual treat by commissioning an extra 8 minutes (more…)
