Doctor Who Confidential

RTD to Leave, non-shock

Well the speculation probably started the day he got the job but the BBC has officially announced that Russell T Davies is stepping down from the helm of Doctor Who to be replaced by Stephen Moffat after the 2009 specials come to a close. So, the man who brought Doctor Who back to our screens has served his time to be replaced by the man who is widely acknowledged as bringing us the best episodes of the relaunched (more…)

4×06: The Doctor’s Daughter

Last year, Stephen Greenhorn gave us the intriguing Lazarus Experiment.  It was a tale of genetic manipulation gone wrong that had a few unforseen links to and consequences in the season finale.  This year we get a genetic manipulation gone right story as a “progeny machine” was heavily featured, which created completely perfect people in a matter of seconds from a small cell sample.  So, after all the (more…)

4×01: Partners In Crime

Season premieres from year’s past have all been thematically similar.  Russell T Davies pens a tale that introduces the audience to the new dynamic of Doctor/Companion that serves to set the scene for what’s to come over the next 12 weekends with the story generally seeming of secondary importance to character.  In 2005, Rose kicked off the new era as the very first story (re)introducing us to the mythology of the show through the wide eyes of the eponymous, (more…)

Jump Aboard the Marketing Machine

The launch of series four of the revitalised Doctor Who is beating a well-trodden path.  All the production team have been playing their cards close to their collective chests for months since production began with occasional casting scoops and episode titles being revealed through the usual sources.  A teaser at the end of the Christmas special gave us a glimpse of the treats to come and that was about all the 13.3 million of us saw before “T-minus 14 days” signalled the start of the hype. Doctor Who Pioneer Passes

Today, is the 44th anniversary of Doctor Who’s debut on TV screens.  How sad then for news to break this afternoon of the passing of the show’s very first producer.  Verity Lambert OBE was a ground-breaking television pioneer.  Others will write better obituaries than I can and her achievements will be remebered by many.  Regular readers will know that this site has leaning towards all things Who, so I could not let this pass without mention.  Indeed, she was even cunningly name-checked in the last series during the episode, Human Nature. Back in Action

Way back on Sunday 1st January when we were nursing sore heads (and I was re-launching this website) there was a little show that sneaked onto BBC1 from the team that brought us Doctor Who. It wasn’t the much hyped Torchwood that was rattling towards its conclusion late at night on minority channels but instead it was The Invasion of the Bane, the first installment of the Sarah Jane Adventures. Now, here we are nine months later and that embryonic first outing has matured (more…)
