Back in Action

Way back on Sunday 1st January when we were nursing sore heads (and I was re-launching this website) there was a little show that sneaked onto BBC1 from the team that brought us Doctor Who. It wasn’t the much hyped Torchwood that was rattling towards its conclusion late at night on minority channels but instead it was The Invasion of the Bane, the first installment of the Sarah Jane Adventures. Now, here we are nine months later and that embryonic first outing has matured

Where Did It All Go Right?

Much overdue but here, at last, are my considered thoughts on “Last of the Time Lords”, the final instalment of series three of Doctor Who. Even though it was loved and loathed in apparent equal measure within the picky world of fandom, the broadcast secured some very positive viewing figures that we all now seem to take for granted from these finales and fairly widespread acclaim.  Even the BBC invested a little extra in this televisual treat by commissioning an extra 8 minutes

Problem Solving

A three-parter in new Doctor Who is unheard of, although the older fans among us may remember the occasional 6 x 25-minute stories of old that equate to much the same duration. The result is that “The Sound of Drums” sits a little uncomfortably between the opening shocks of “Utopia” and the almost inevitable thrills and spills of the finale this evening in “The Last Of The Time Lords”.  So, for an episode with neither a begining nor an end it is a little unusual but it still

John Smith, Gone But Not Forgotten

I thought that there was, quite simply, no way that “The Family Of Blood” could live up to the greatness of part one of the story, “Human Nature” that was shown last week. The second half of all bar one of the two-parters that have graced our screens over the last three years have been a little bit weaker than its preceeding installment. Additionally, Human Nature was such a fantastic 45-minutes of TV that it was always going to be nigh-on-impossible to top. I was ever so wrong.

Talking About My Regeneration

One of those added pleasures on a Saturday night (or more usually a Sunday morning) after watching the latest episode of a certain BBC sci-fi show is the fact we get another 40 minutes or so of chat about the programme over on BBC3’s Doctor Who Confidential. The first time I recall having seen on these “shows about other shows” was way back when the BBC used to broadcast a studio-based chat show after every episode of 24 (although for the life of me I can’t remember what it

Are We There Yet?

Thousands sat through the Man United v Watford FA Cup semi final waiting to see whether Watford could pull off a shock victory.  Not through any great sporting interest, or even for a love of football but because the BBC had announced that, if the match was to go to extra-time then the third episode of Doctor Who, “Gridlock” would be delayed by a week.  What outrage there would have been.  The season was already a week later than planned after being delayed by the England v
