“My name is Hiro Nakamura, I’m from the future…. and I have a message for you”

The Heroes episode “Collision” changed me from a casual observer of the show who had a detached intrigue ‘cos-everyone-said-it-was-good into gibbering fanboy of this unmissable, appointment TV. I have been largely oblivious to spoilers due to the lack of real interest on my part up to this point (other than hearing something about Christopher Eccleston’s future involvement on the Doctor Who forums… or is that “fora”?) but the internet is awash with talk and now (more…)

Comic Relief

Primeval is continuing apace on Saturday nights and it continues to be a bit of a mixed bag.  I’ve just watched last night’s “Episode 3″ (Oddly, they don’t seem to do episode titles, although a Friends-like approach of “The One With The Mososaur” might suffice).   Following the hocum of “The One With The Giant Creepy-Crawlys” last week, I was quite enthused by the underwater antics this time out and the Walking With Dinosaurs special effects continue to be a very high standard. Holding Out For A Hero

After the internet buzz surrounding TV’s “Next Big Thing”, UK viewers got their first (legitimate) opportunity to see Heroes last night as the first two episodes debuted on the Sci-Fi Channel. The comic book nature of the subject matter might have led one to think that we were in store for a Mutant X style slice of nonsense but what we saw was all together different. A number of different strands ran through the hour as we were introduced to the extended cast of characters (more…)

Coelurosauravus… “Rex” To His Friends

If Primeval is the answer, it must have been a very peculiar question. ITV launched its “Doctor Who-beater” last night and reviews have been mixed, from the not so bad to the not so good. I was generally entertained throughout the whole hour by a fairly typical “premiere episode” storyline: lots of different people from different backgrounds who are drawn together (in this case, to the Forest of Dean) to investigate the strange goings on. There are nods to, and obvious comparissons (more…)

Come In Number Six

The second part of “Exodus” (the fourth installment of series 3 in the new Battlestar Galactica) saw the end of the occupation of New Caprica… the clue was in the title I guess, and there was plenty more intrigue as the last remnants of humanity continued to battle against their oppressors.  The Baltar storyline is wonderfully underplayed (by Jamie Callis) as his initial self-absorbed personality has been manipulated and coerced by the cylons to the extent that he was seen here (more…)

Random Quest

Retrospective Review #3 of 5

BBC4 have followed up their recent re-makes of the classic sci-fi shows, Quatermass Experiment and A For Andromeda, with a version of Random Quest (based on the John Wyndham story) with isn’t-he-like-his-dad, Samuel West in the lead role. I missed the chance to see both Samuel and Timothy perform together at the local theatre recently in “A Number”, which is a play about human cloning and, judging by his assured performance here, I say that with some regret. Random (more…)
