It’s Just Not Cricket

I was flicking between channels at the weekend and caught a little of the UK Snooker Championships on BBC2, well, about ten minutes if I’m honest.  I fell out of love with snooker many years ago (much the same as many people it would seem) and I now barely keep an eye on any of the tournaments or results.  It’s odd to think that this was such a popular television sport here in the UK so (relatively) recently but I guess, as the pace of televsision in general has quickened then (more…)

Ashes 3

Didn’t It Look Good For a While?

The pain has eased. The emotions are back in check. I feel like I can talk about it at last. Time, they tell me, is a great healer but it will take much more time for the wounds of this debacle to fully heal, it may take years. England fought back against the Aussies in the second test in Adelaide. After the humbling performance at the Gabba, fighting back was all they could do and for four days it wasn’t going too badly at all… 551-6 declared and the hosts reduced to 74-3, Ponting balloons the (more…)

Ashes 1 1

“I think I’m Going Back”

They’re back and they’re bad. A terrible toss to lose at the Gabba saw the defence of the Ashes get off to a shocker of a start as the Aussies finished on 346-3 at the end of the first day, and it was an all too familiar outcome with some notable similarities to the disasterous 2002/3 tour. Freddie was obviously pumped up judging from his celebrations for his two wickets but everyone else looked a bit over-awed: Grievous Bodily Harmison (more…)

Ashes06 1

Back to Square One

Next Thursday sees the England Cricket team begin their defence of the Ashes against Australia, and with the fun, excitement and thrills of last summer’s amazing series still fresh in the mind, it’s all set to be great entertainment.  The tourists did not start out as well as hoped when they got thoroughly beaten in their opening match by a Prime Minister’s XI.  Oddly though, it was a 50-over match… quite who thought that it was a good idea to begin the preparations with a (more…)

ICC

Harbijan Steers India Home

The ICC Champion’s Trophy proper has started in earnest following a very odd preliminary stage held over six matches last week, which saw West Indies and Sri Lanka qualify for this eight-team, two-group tournament.  It is not surprising that there isn’t a great deal of passion for this mini-World Cup as the structure and even purpose of it doesn’t seem to have been thought up with anything approaching common sense.  Host nation, India, got their campaign underway yesterday with a fairly (more…)

Cricket England ODI

Funny old games

Yesterday successfully managed to highlight one of the oddities that comes with that most fickle of past-times, being an England sporting supporter.  First there was the cricket team… since riding high on their glories of last summer when the Ashes were regained for the first time in 18 years, most would have been forgiven for thinking that a golden age of cricketing accomplishment was dawning for this England team.  However, while the five-day version of the game remains fairly healthy despite the below par tours of the subcontinent in the winter and a string of injuries, the one-day version is atrocious.  England have lost 8 of their 9 ODI’s this summer, and the one, non-defeat was the abandoned match on Saturday.  Ashes heroes Trescothic, Strauss and Pietersen studiously (and incomprehensibly) fail to deliver in the limited over format.

England ECQ

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford (the footballing version), their national footballing counterparts have been going through something of a resurgence in fortune.  The Ericsson/Beckham era is almost forgotten as McClaren’s men have an enviable “Played 2, Won 2, Goals For 9, Goals Against 0” record.  Perhaps the most striking sign of the changing times is the number 7 shirt, which has been passed from Beckham to the previously derided Owen Hargreaves, who has excelled with one Man-Of-The-Match performance after another.  But the cricket has tought us one thing, don’t let short term success lull you to a false sense of security.  With further European qualifiers coming and Ashes round the corner it’s going to be an interesting time for the fans.
