Doctor Who Retrospective #3 of 10 “The Unquiet Dead”

The anticpation for The Unquiet Dead was pretty high and one of the reasons for this was the fact that this episode was written by the League Of Gentlemen’s Mark Gatiss, who has since kept his association with the show by penning The Idiot’s Lantern, narrating Doctor Who Confidential’s second season and playing Doctor Lazarus in the soon to be seen third season. TUD is also noteworthy for its star, Eve Myles, who went on to play PC Gwen Cooper in the spinoff series, (more…)

TV Week In Review: 2007, Week 1

In these days of PVRs and DVD box-sets it’s difficult to know whether the shows one person watches are the same as the shows other folk are viewing.  For example, I’m still catching up on the last few installments of The State Within, which are about a month old and I even have a whole bunch of Firefly left to enjoy on DVD that I’ve been meaning to watch for the best part of two years.  And as we move towards a world (more…)

Christmas Review #11 of 12

A double header of Torchwood on New Year’s Day saw the first season reach its tumltuous conclusion on BBC3.  The first half was the episode “Captain Jack Harkness”, which saw Jack and Tosh diverted through the rift back to a 1940’s dance hall only to come face-to-face with another Captain Jack Harkness, who, it turned out, was the original.  It was in the 1940’s that we first met the Captain back in the first season of Doctor Who in the ‘fantastic’ episode, “The Empty Child”, (more…)

Bloody Hell

We’re eight episodes into the first series of Torchwood and, if nothing else, it’s divided the opinion amongst, well, everyone. I have to confess that I’m in the “loving it” camp, even though I acknowledge that it can be a little hit and miss at times. The plots are tending to be a little derivative of other genre shows with the best/worst example being the “Countrycide” episode. In fact, Russell T Davies stated as much in the installment of Torchwood: De-Classified, which (more…)

Lost Is Found On Sky

Debuting on Murdoch’s $ky network, season three of Lost has begun on SkyOne with a Sunday night double-header of “A Tale Of Two Cities” and “The Glass Ballerina“. Picking up exactly where we left off, this is a mini-run of 6 episodes that will air before a winter break (and clashing with Torchwood… grrrr!). Following the move from CH4/E4 I was surprised and not a little irritated to find that we were still being “entertained” by the 118 men before and after every segment, but even that, (more…)

Point to the Cyberwoman

Episode 4 of Torchwood, saw the team discover that one of their own had been hiding a “Cyberwoman” in the basement and I’m starting to see the Doctor Who-like enthusiasm of the crew get reflected on screen, they’re all clearly having the time of their lives: picture the scene… “I know, I know, let’s have a cyberman fight with a pterodactyl!”.  The whole story felt like it could easily have translated to (or may had been translated from) the parent show but that didn’t detract from (more…)
